A proposed bill in Albany, New York, will make driving while intoxicated laws even tougher for the state.
Lawmakers are proposing a bill that would apply the three-strike rule when it comes to drunk driving arrests and would take a firm stand and end driving privileges for that individual.
The bill would terminate an individual's license forever if a person is convicted three times for DWI or if the driver is at fault in three accidents where there are injuries involved. Lawmakers feel that this bill will hopefully stop those that continue to drink and drive, and the current law does not terminate driving privileges even after multiple arrests and convictions.
A DWI charge can be life-altering without the support of an experienced attorney on your side. If you've been charged with a DWI, you need an effective defense team that has the experience and knowledge to give you the best possible outcome.
Being pulled over for drunk driving can mean possible jail time, the loss of your license and large fines. Besides this current proposed bill, New York has increased penalties for DWI defendants and they include:
- If your Breathalyzer result is more than .18, you can be charged with aggravated DWI.
- If you refuse to take the Breathalyzer test your license will be suspended automatically pending an administrative hearing.
- You could be sentenced for up to one year in county jail.
- If you get a second DWI within 10 years, the second DWI is considered a felony with the possibility of a four-year prison sentence.
A DWI will change your life, but the expertise of an attorney will help to minimize the consequences of it.
