About 90 miles southeast of Newburgh, a man police claim was driving drunk was clocked at 106 mph on a New York highway.
The driver was pulled over on the Southern State Parkway in North Amityville last weekend, according to a media source.
The 23-year-old man was driving a BMW eastbound at about 4:41 in the morning, police said.
The Deer Park resident reportedly failed a field sobriety test. His blood alcohol content was apparently tested at 0.15 percent. The legal threshold in New York is 0.08 percent.
He was charged with driving while intoxicated, as well as speeding and other traffic violations. His court appearance has been scheduled for late March.
In an unrelated case not far from there, an East Northport man was arrested for DWI after a New York state trooper reportedly advised him not to drive.
The 38-year-old man was arrested for driving while intoxicated in Commack.
A trooper reported seeing the man trying, without keys, to get into a locked Jeep Liberty in a park lot near the Long Island Expressway.
The trooper reported that he stopped and spoke with the man, and after determining that the man might be intoxicated, advised him to call for a ride rather than to attempt driving himself.
About 30 minutes later, the trooper saw the man driving the Jeep on a nearby road. The man was pulled over for allowing his vehicle to drift out of its lane. The trooper said the man's speech was slurred and he showed poor coordination.
He was charged with DWI and traffic violations.
He has a court date next week.
